How we estimate politicians’ wealth
Members of Congress and many other officials must file a public financial disclosure every year. The forms list assets and debts in value bands, such as $1,001 to $15,000, rather than exact amounts. We add up every band to get a low and a high figure, and show the midpoint as a simple guide. The forms leave out the home an official lives in, cars and personal belongings, and federal retirement accounts, so true net worth can be higher.
Each profile has a timeline chart built from every report we could find, with the year the person took office marked, and a “Since taking office” box that shows how the range changed. We show the numbers only. We never guess why they changed, and we only mention a reason when a filing or a named news report states it.
