Since the earliest online report (2014)
Compares the 2014 report with the 2025 report, using the same method for both. He took office in 1985. The Senate's online database has his electronic reports from 2014 on. For 2007 and 2008 we show asset totals that Forbes reported from his disclosures. Nothing earlier is shown because we have no sourced figure for it. Changes can come from a spouse’s assets, market moves, property values, new debts or how filers choose bands, and the forms do not say which. We do not guess.

Where the money comes from
Main sources named in the disclosures and the reporting we cite. The forms don’t split the total into exact amounts, so we don’t show percentages.
Mitch McConnell reported household assets minus debts of $21.9M to $84.1M, a midpoint of about $53M, on his latest financial disclosure (Annual Report for CY 2025, filed August 13, 2026).
Mitch McConnell has represented Kentucky in the U.S. Senate since 1985, making him the longest-serving senator in the state's history. He led Senate Republicans from 2007 to 2025, including six years as majority leader, the longest run of any Senate party leader.
His wife, Elaine Chao, served as U.S. Secretary of Labor and later Secretary of Transportation. Most of the assets on his recent disclosures are listed in her name, and her board roles at companies such as Kroger appear as income sources on his reports.
What his 2025 disclosure shows
His report for 2025, filed on August 13, 2026, lists 76 assets with a value. The two largest, a Vanguard S&P 500 fund and a Vanguard international stock fund, are each listed at $5 million to $25 million and owned by his wife. The report also lists a jointly owned property in Washington, D.C. with a rental carriage house, Wells Fargo stock in his wife's name, and several Vanguard index funds held in his own trust. No debts are listed, which has been true on every electronic report since 2014.
Adding up the bands gives a range of $21.9 million to $84.1 million for the end of 2025. That is a little below his 2024 report, which came to $22.9 million to $95.3 million.
How his wealth changed over time
Forbes, reviewing his older paper filings, reported that his disclosed assets were $3.1 million to $12.7 million in 2007 and $7.3 million to $33.1 million in 2008. Forbes and Politico both tied the 2008 jump to a gift of $5 million to $25 million from James Chao, Elaine Chao's father. Politico quoted a McConnell spokesman as saying the gift was made in April 2008 to the senator and his wife in memory of her mother, who died in August 2007.
Since his first electronic report, for 2014, the bottom of his range has grown from $9.4 million to $21.9 million and the top from $34.9 million to $84.1 million. Much of the reported portfolio is in broad stock market index funds, so the totals tend to move with the stock market.
