Kirti Azad is a former India all-rounder and a member of the squad that won the 1983 World Cup, India's first. He played seven Tests and 25 one-day internationals in the early 1980s and was a long-serving Delhi player. He is the son of Bhagwat Jha Azad, a former chief minister of Bihar.
He followed his father into politics and won the Darbhanga seat in Bihar three times for the BJP. After being suspended from that party in 2015 he moved to the Congress and then the Trinamool Congress, which fielded him in Bardhaman-Durgapur in 2024, where he beat the BJP's Dilip Ghosh. His affidavit, filed under his full name Azad Kirti Jha, declared a net worth of about ₹9.6 crore.
What he declared
India TV's summary of the 2024 affidavit splits his ₹10.2 crore of assets into about ₹3.5 crore of movable assets, such as savings and investments, and about ₹6.7 crore of immovable property, with ₹57.4 lakh of liabilities. India TV called the asset total his net worth; we subtract the liabilities, which leaves about ₹9.6 crore.
His wealth reflects a long public career rather than cricket money. He played in the era before central contracts and the IPL, when India players earned modest match fees, and spent most of the following decades in parliament.
About this figure
Every candidate for an Indian election has to file a sworn affidavit (Form 26) listing everything he and his household own and owe. In his 2024 Lok Sabha affidavit, Kirti Azad declared total assets of ₹10,20,14,033 and liabilities of ₹57,38,812. We subtract one from the other to get the declared net worth of about ₹9.6 crore, about $1 million at the October 23, 2026 exchange rate. The affidavit figures are transcribed by the Association for Democratic Reforms on MyNeta and were reported by national newspapers at the time.
Keep in mind what this number is. Assets in an affidavit are listed at the values the candidate states, and property is often entered well below what it would sell for today. It is an official declaration, not a journalist's estimate of his wealth, and it only covers what was owned on the day it was filed.
