Darius Kasparaitis was one of the most feared hitters in the NHL. The Lithuanian-born defenceman made his name with Dynamo Moscow, won the 1992 Soviet title with it and won Olympic gold with the Unified Team in 1992, the same year the New York Islanders drafted him fifth overall. He played for the Islanders, Pittsburgh, Colorado and the New York Rangers, where he was an alternate captain, and won Olympic silver in 1998 and bronze in 2002 playing for Russia.
The TOP 500 magazine's December 2025 ranking of the richest Lithuanians puts him 311th with €28 million, about $31 million at the October 23, 2026 exchange rate.
How he made his money
Kasparaitis earned his fortune over 14 NHL seasons, including a long contract with the New York Rangers, which he signed in 2002 after finishing that season with the Colorado Avalanche. He was named an Honoured Master of Sports of the USSR in 1992 and joined the Russian and Soviet Hockey Hall of Fame in 2016.
The TOP 500 figure is the magazine's estimate of his wealth, with no breakdown.
Career at a glance
Known for his aggressive, physical style, he was one of the hardest hitters of his era. His hit on Eric Lindros in 1998 is one of the best remembered of the era.
Because Lithuania's national team had never played at the top level, he chose to represent Russia, and his 28 Olympic games are a record among Russian national team players. He holds Lithuanian and US citizenship.
