Dan Gertler is an Israeli businessman known for mining deals in Africa, mainly in the Democratic Republic of Congo. His family was active in the diamond trade, and he opened his own diamond business at 22. In 1996, he founded Dan Gertler International. He bought his first mine in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1997. From there, he expanded from diamonds into copper, cobalt, and other mining interests through a network of companies and partnerships.
His wealth grew through mining rights, company stakes, and major transactions in Congo. From September 2000 through April 2001, he held sole rights to buy diamonds produced in territory controlled by the Congolese government. In 2002, Emaxon gained rights to market 88% of MIBA rough-diamond production, about 600,000 carats a month. Later, he moved deeper into copper and cobalt projects, including Nikanor, DEM Mining, Tremalt, Kansuki, and work tied to Glencore.

He later shifted much of his focus to copper and cobalt. In 2004, Global Enterprises Corporate signed an agreement with Gécamines tied to the Kananga and Tilwezembe copper mines. Nikanor then became a key vehicle for some of those assets, raising $400 million in its 2006 float and reaching a market value of $1.5 billion. Gertler also took a major stake in DEM Mining in 2006, bought Tremalt that year for about $60 million, and partnered with Glencore on Congo mining interests.
