Bjørn Maaseide is a former beach volleyball player from Stavanger who represented Norway at three Olympic Games, in 1996, 2000 and 2004, and won several European Championship medals with Jan Kvalheim in the 1990s. After his playing days he helped bring the 2009 Beach Volleyball World Championships to Stavanger.

He became even better known as a businessman. Finansavisen calls him "Sats-kongen" (the Sats king), and his investment group is run through BFBK Holding. Kapital's 2026 table of Norway's richest sports stars puts his fortune at NOK 1,250 million, behind only Erling Haaland and Martin Ødegaard. That is about $134 million at the October 23, 2026 exchange rate.

How he made his money

Unlike the footballers above him, Maaseide did not make his fortune from playing. Beach volleyball paid modestly in his era, and his wealth comes from business, mainly the companies and investments in his BFBK Holding group.

Finansavisen reported in July 2025 that BFBK Holding, the top company in his group, made a profit of NOK 76.1 million in 2024, helped by NOK 74.1 million of reversed write-downs on its investments. The biggest driver was Maaseide Promotion, which has 14 subsidiaries of its own.

Career at a glance

Maaseide formed one of Europe's leading beach volleyball pairs with Jan Kvalheim in the 1990s, winning several European Championship medals, and later played with Iver Horrem and Vegard Høidalen. His sister Kathrine Maaseide also played beach volleyball at the top level.

In 2007 he returned to the sand with Horrem and played the World Championships in Gstaad. After the pair missed out on the 2008 Olympics he turned to bringing the 2009 World Championships to Stavanger.
