Mashrafe Mortaza, known as Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, is Bangladesh's most successful captain. A fast bowler whose career survived many knee operations, he took four wickets in Bangladesh's famous 2007 World Cup win over India and, as one-day captain, led the team to its first World Cup quarter-final in 2015 and the Champions Trophy semi-finals in 2017.
He was elected to parliament for Narail-2, his home district, for the Awami League in 2018 and re-elected in January 2024, months before parliament was dissolved when Sheikh Hasina's government fell. His affidavit for the 2024 election, reported by UNB, declared assets of Tk 9.43 crore and a Tk 89.1 lakh bank loan.
What he declared
UNB reported that his declared assets rose only slightly in five years, from Tk 9.15 crore in 2018 to Tk 9.43 crore in 2023, while his annual income more than halved to Tk 88.54 lakh once he was no longer under a Bangladesh Cricket Board contract. About Tk 14 lakh of that came from shares, savings certificates and interest, and Tk 23 lakh from his MP's honorarium and allowances.
His assets include a 2,800-square-foot flat worth Tk 1.08 crore, a plot in Purbachal, a six-storey house in Mirpur, about Tk 1.81 crore in cash, Tk 1.04 crore in three banks, Tk 2.46 crore in savings certificates and fixed deposits, and a car, two microbuses and an SUV valued at Tk 1.75 crore. Against that he owes Tk 89,07,775 to City Bank.
How to read the figure
Like other election affidavits in South Asia, the values are those the candidate declares, and property is often entered at what it cost. The result, about Tk 8.54 crore or roughly $0.7 million, is modest by international standards but reflects the pay scale of Bangladeshi cricket during most of his career.
UNB also noted that he holds Tk 2,50,000 in bonds, debentures and shares in nine listed companies, electronic goods worth Tk 15.50 lakh and furniture worth Tk 18.80 lakh. His 2018 total excluded 50 tolas of gold, so the two years are not perfectly comparable.
