Harbhajan Singh is one of India's greatest spin bowlers. The off-spinner from Jalandhar took 417 Test wickets, and in the 2001 home series against Australia he took India's first Test hat-trick and 32 wickets in three matches to help end Australia's long winning streak. He won the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 World Cup, and played more than a decade in the IPL.
He retired in December 2021 and in March 2022 the Aam Aadmi Party sent him to the Rajya Sabha from Punjab. His nomination affidavit declared assets of ₹81.80 crore and liabilities of ₹3.53 crore, a declared net worth of about ₹78.3 crore.
How he made his money
Harbhajan's wealth was built over a long career that straddled India's old and new cricket economies. He was a regular in India's teams for well over a decade and then a well-paid IPL player with Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders, winning titles with Mumbai and Chennai.
Alongside cricket he has worked in television, as a commentator and on reality shows, and has held endorsement deals. His affidavit put almost all of his ₹81.8 crore of assets on the plus side, with only ₹3.5 crore of liabilities.
About this figure
Every candidate for an Indian election has to file a sworn affidavit (Form 26) listing everything he and his household own and owe. In his 2022 Rajya Sabha affidavit, Harbhajan Singh declared total assets of ₹81,80,10,986 and liabilities of ₹3,52,84,251. We subtract one from the other to get the declared net worth of about ₹78.3 crore, about $8.2 million at the October 23, 2026 exchange rate. The affidavit figures are transcribed by the Association for Democratic Reforms on MyNeta and were reported by national newspapers at the time.
Keep in mind what this number is. Assets in an affidavit are listed at the values the candidate states, and property is often entered well below what it would sell for today. It is an official declaration, not a journalist's estimate of his wealth, and it only covers what was owned on the day it was filed.
