Mohammad Azharuddin is one of India's most stylish batters and one of its longest-serving captains. He announced himself by scoring hundreds in each of his first three Tests in 1984 and 1985, played 99 Tests and more than 300 one-day internationals, and led India at three World Cups. His career ended in 2000 when the BCCI banned him for life after the match-fixing inquiry, a ban the Andhra Pradesh High Court set aside in 2012.
He moved into politics with the Congress and was elected to the Lok Sabha from Moradabad in 2009. In 2023 he contested the Jubilee Hills seat in the Telangana assembly election, and Business Standard, using his affidavit, lists his net worth as ₹16,87,18,651, about ₹16.9 crore.
What he declared
Business Standard's election page, built on data from the Association for Democratic Reforms, breaks his 2023 affidavit down into immovable assets of ₹14,94,15,941 and movable assets of ₹4,00,61,210, for total assets of ₹18,94,77,151. Against that he declared liabilities of ₹2,07,58,500, leaving the ₹16.87 crore net worth.
Most of what he declared is property, which is typical for former players of his generation, who retired before the IPL made Indian cricketers rich. His playing years were in the 1980s and 1990s, when match fees and endorsements were a fraction of today's.
About this figure
Every candidate for an Indian election has to file a sworn affidavit (Form 26) listing everything he and his household own and owe. In his 2023 Telangana election affidavit, Mohammad Azharuddin declared total assets of ₹18,94,77,151 and liabilities of ₹2,07,58,500. We subtract one from the other to get the declared net worth of ₹16,87,18,651, about $1.8 million at the October 23, 2026 exchange rate. The affidavit figures are transcribed by the Association for Democratic Reforms on MyNeta and were reported by national newspapers at the time.
Keep in mind what this number is. Assets in an affidavit are listed at the values the candidate states, and property is often entered well below what it would sell for today. It is an official declaration, not a journalist's estimate of his wealth, and it only covers what was owned on the day it was filed.
