Gautam Gambhir is a former India opening batter who played big innings in two World Cup finals. He top-scored with 75 when India won the first T20 World Cup in 2007, and his 97 in the 2011 World Cup final in Mumbai set up India's win over Sri Lanka. As captain of Kolkata Knight Riders he won the Indian Premier League in 2012 and 2014, before retiring from all cricket in 2018.
In 2019 he entered politics and won the East Delhi seat in the Lok Sabha for the BJP. His election affidavit made him the richest of all the Delhi candidates that year, with declared assets of about ₹147 crore against liabilities of about ₹35.5 crore, a declared net worth of about ₹111.6 crore. He did not stand again in 2024 and was appointed head coach of India's men's team that July.
How he made his money
Gambhir's wealth was built in the IPL era. He was one of the most expensive players at the early IPL auctions, first with Delhi and then as captain of Kolkata Knight Riders, alongside his India contracts and a run of endorsement deals. His affidavit showed an income of nearly ₹12.40 crore in his 2017-18 tax return, the year before he retired.
The Hindustan Times and The Indian Express both reported that most of the ₹147 crore he declared was in property, held by him and his wife, and the affidavit also lists substantial liabilities of about ₹35.5 crore.
About this figure
Every candidate for an Indian election has to file a sworn affidavit (Form 26) listing everything he and his household own and owe. In his 2019 Lok Sabha affidavit, Gautam Gambhir declared total assets of ₹1,47,15,87,789 and liabilities of ₹35,53,01,812. We subtract one from the other to get the declared net worth of about ₹111.6 crore, about $11.8 million at the October 23, 2026 exchange rate. The affidavit figures are transcribed by the Association for Democratic Reforms on MyNeta and were reported by national newspapers at the time. News reports at the time quoted the ₹147 crore asset total, which is not the same as net worth.
Keep in mind what this number is. Assets in an affidavit are listed at the values the candidate states, and property is often entered well below what it would sell for today. It is an official declaration, not a journalist's estimate of his wealth, and it only covers what was owned on the day it was filed.
