He went on to play 12 NBA seasons for Orlando, Phoenix, Washington and the Los Angeles Clippers, reaching the 2009 NBA Finals with the Magic and spending five seasons as Washington's starting center. How he made his money
Gortat's biggest pay days came in the NBA. Orlando matched a five-year, $34 million offer sheet from Dallas in 2009, and in 2014 he re-signed with the Wizards on a reported five-year, $60 million contract.
He has also been active in business and investing, which he talked about with Przegląd Sportowy in July 2025.
Career at a glance
Gortat grew up in Łódź, where he played for ŁKS Łódź before moving to Germany. Orlando acquired his draft rights, and he spent several seasons as Dwight Howard's backup, including the 2009 run to the NBA Finals.
A trade to Phoenix in December 2010 made him a starter, and he became one of only a handful of centers to average a double-double in a season. He then spent five seasons as Washington's starting center.
