Anže Kopitar is the greatest hockey player Slovenia has produced. Drafted 11th overall by the Los Angeles Kings in 2005, he became the first Slovenian in the NHL in 2006 and spent his entire 20-season career with the Kings, becoming captain and the franchise's all-time leader in points and assists. He won the Stanley Cup in 2012 and 2014, leading the playoffs in points both times, and won the Selke Trophy as the best defensive forward twice.

Finance's 2025 list of the 100 richest Slovenians put his fortune at €46.1 million, just above that year's €44.4 million entry threshold. That is about $52 million at the October 23, 2026 exchange rate.

How he made his money

Kopitar earned his money in the NHL, where he signed long contracts with the Kings as their No. 1 centre for well over a decade. Unlike football or basketball, hockey has a hard salary cap, so even the best players earn less than stars in other big American leagues.

Finance's figure is what is left of his gross pay after tax and costs such as agents. It does not count investment returns.

Career at a glance

Kopitar grew up in Jesenice, played junior hockey for his home-town club and moved to Sweden at 16 to play for Södertälje before heading to Los Angeles.

He was known as much for his defence as his scoring, winning the Selke Trophy in 2016 and 2018 and the Lady Byng Trophy for sportsmanship three times. He also played for Slovenia at the 2014 Winter Olympics.

About this estimate

Finance, Slovenia's business daily, and its magazine Finance Manager publish a list of the 100 richest Slovenians every November. The 2025 edition came out on November 19, 2025, and was widely reported by RTV SLO, Večer and 24ur. Four athletes made it: Luka Dončić, Goran Dragić, Jan Oblak and Anže Kopitar. The entry threshold was €44.4 million.

For athletes, Finance says it starts from gross career earnings and deducts taxes and estimated costs such as agents, and it does not count any returns on invested savings. That makes it a deliberately cautious estimate of net career earnings, not a full count of everything they own. We show the figure as published, in euros, with a rough dollar conversion. A new edition is due on November 19, 2026.
