Where the money comes from
| Kapital estimate | NOK 1,000 million in Kapital's 2026 table of Norway's richest sports stars, fourth on the table Finansavisen / Kapital |
| Business | Has made good money from sports equipment and other business after his career, Nettavisen notes Nettavisen |
Bjørn Dæhlie is one of the greatest winter athletes of all time. The Norwegian cross-country skier won eight Olympic gold medals and twelve Olympic medals in total between 1992 and 1998, along with a long list of world championship titles. Injuries from a roller-skiing accident ended his career in 2001, and he went on to build a business career, including a sportswear brand that carries his name.
Kapital's 2026 table of Norway's richest sports stars puts his fortune at NOK 1 billion (NOK 1,000 million), fourth among the athletes it lists. That is about $107 million at the October 23, 2026 exchange rate.
How he made his money
Cross-country skiing never paid salaries like football. Dæhlie earned prize money and sponsorship as the best skier in the world in the 1990s, but most of his wealth came afterwards, from business. Nettavisen describes him as a ski legend and businessman who has made good money from sports equipment, among other things.
That contrast is the point of the Finansavisen report on Kapital's 2026 list. Economist Ola Honningdal Grytten says Dæhlie and other heroes of earlier generations had to be skilled businesspeople to get rich, joking that next to Erling Haaland's fortune, Dæhlie looks like a corner kiosk.
