Where the money comes from
| Young Rich List rank | 41st overall in 2025 (Financial Review, via Nine for Brands, SEN and Nine.com.au) Nine for Brands (publisher of the Australian Financial Review) |
Cameron Smith, from Brisbane, is one of Australia's best golfers of the past decade. His standout year was 2022, when he won the Players Championship in March and then the 150th Open Championship at St Andrews in July, closing with a final-round 64 to overtake Rory McIlroy. Later that year he joined the Saudi-backed LIV Golf league, where he captains the Ripper GC team.
The Financial Review Young Rich List 2025 estimated his wealth at A$176 million, 41st on the list of Australia's richest people aged 40 and under. That is about $123 million at the October 22, 2026 exchange rate.
How he made his money
Smith built his early wealth on the PGA Tour, where wins such as the 2020 Sony Open, the 2022 Tournament of Champions and the 2022 Players Championship, one of the richest events in golf, brought large paydays. His move to LIV Golf in 2022 reportedly came with a large upfront contract, and LIV's prize funds are among the biggest in the sport.
He also leads Ripper GC, LIV's all-Australian team, which gives players a share in the team's value, and he has sponsors in golf equipment and apparel.
About this estimate
The figure on this page is the Financial Review's own estimate, published in Australian dollars. The full list sits behind the AFR's paywall, so we checked Smith's figure and ranking in the media release from Nine, which publishes the AFR, and in reports by SEN and Nine.com.au. All of them give A$176 million and 41st place.
Fellow golfer Jason Day was one place behind him at A$167 million. We show the figure exactly as published, with a rough US dollar conversion, and have not changed it ourselves. LIV contract figures are not confirmed publicly, so we do not add them.
The Young Rich List covers Australians aged 40 and under. In 2025 a fortune of at least A$44 million was needed to make it, up from A$38 million in 2024, and 13 current and former athletes qualified.
