Phil Mickelson is one of the most successful and popular golfers of his era. The left-hander from San Diego won a PGA Tour event as an amateur in 1991, turned professional the following year and has won six major championships: three Masters, the 2005 and 2021 PGA Championships and the 2013 Open Championship. His 2021 PGA Championship win at Kiawah Island made him, at 50, the oldest major champion in history.

Forbes put his net worth at $375 million in December 2016, when it ranked him No. 18 on its first list of America's Wealthiest Celebrities. Only two other athletes made that top 20: Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods.

How he made his money

Sponsors, not prize money, built most of Mickelson's fortune. Forbes calculated in 2016 that he had earned $665 million since turning pro from prize money, endorsements, appearance fees and golf course design. Of that, his PGA Tour prize money was $82 million, the second-highest total in the sport behind Woods. In the 12 months before that article, Forbes said, he made $50 million off the course alone.

His long list of partners at the time included Callaway, Barclays, KPMG, ExxonMobil, Rolex and Amgen, the maker of the psoriatic arthritis drug Enbrel. Mickelson was diagnosed with the disease in 2010. Forbes noted that sponsors valued his ability to connect with fans, and that in 2015 he had passed Woods for the first time to become the world's highest-paid golfer.

Since the Forbes estimate

Mickelson's money story has changed a lot since 2016. In 2022 he became one of the biggest names to join LIV Golf, the league funded by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, and lost several sponsors during the controversy that followed. His LIV contract terms have not been confirmed by Forbes in a net worth estimate.

Forbes also reported in 2016 that he agreed to repay about $1 million in profits and interest from a 2012 stock trade in an insider trading case in which he was named a relief defendant but not charged. The headline on this page is Forbes' December 2016 estimate. It is the most recent published net worth figure from Forbes that we could find, and we have not updated it ourselves.
