Alex Rodriguez is one of the most productive hitters in baseball history. Drafted first overall by the Seattle Mariners in 1993, he played 22 seasons for the Mariners, Texas Rangers and New York Yankees, finishing with 696 home runs, three American League MVP awards, 14 All-Star selections and the career record for grand slams.

Since retiring in 2016 he has become a full-time businessman. Forbes estimated in April 2021 that he had built a fortune of at least $400 million, and he is now the chairman and CEO of A-Rod Corp and a co-owner of the NBA's Minnesota Timberwolves.

How he made his money

Rodriguez signed two of the three biggest contracts in baseball history, according to Forbes, starting with a record $252 million deal with the Rangers in 2000. Forbes put his career earnings at $575 million by 2017. Forbes also noted that the Yankees paid him $20 million in 2017, a year after he stopped playing.

What sets his story apart is what happened to that money. Forbes estimated in 2021 that roughly $130 million was left as take-home pay after taxes, fees and spending, and that he used it to build A-Rod Corp, a holding company with stakes in tech startups, high-rise buildings, construction firms, hospitality companies and thousands of apartments.

A-Rod Corp and the Timberwolves

Real estate is the heart of the business. Forbes reported that A-Rod Corp had a stake in more than 14,000 multifamily homes and had developed more than 15 million square feet of property, mostly through Monument Capital Management, which he co-founded in 2012. He credits mentors such as Warren Buffett and Magic Johnson with teaching him how to invest.

In 2021 he and former Walmart executive Marc Lore agreed to buy the Minnesota Timberwolves in a deal that valued the team at $1.5 billion, after the pair's earlier bid for the New York Mets failed. Our headline is Forbes' April 2021 estimate, made before that deal closed, so it does not include the value of the team stake. Forbes has not published a newer figure.
