He was also ranked in earlier years (No. 13 with $38.6 million in 2017, for example). Those years are not shown because the older on-field and off-field splits could not be checked. Russell Westbrook is one of the most explosive point guards the NBA has seen. He was drafted fourth overall in 2008, spent 11 seasons with the Oklahoma City Thunder and became the franchise's all-time leading scorer, then played for the Rockets, Wizards, Lakers, Clippers, Nuggets and Kings before retiring in August 2026.
He won the MVP award in 2017, made nine All-Star teams and holds the NBA record for career triple-doubles. Forbes estimated in May 2023 that his net worth was $375 million, making him one of the richest players of his generation who is not a billionaire.
How he made his money
Most of Westbrook's fortune came from his playing contracts. In 2017 he signed a five-year, $207 million extension with the Thunder, which Forbes says was the biggest NBA contract ever at the time by total value. By May 2023, Forbes estimated he had earned more than $336 million in salary over 15 seasons, before taxes and agent fees.
Endorsements added nearly $200 million more by Forbes' count. He extended his deal with Nike's Jordan Brand in 2017 for another ten years and got his first signature shoe in 2018. Forbes notes that those earnings make up the bulk of his net worth.
Life after basketball
Westbrook has been building businesses for years. He started the streetwear label Honor The Gift in 2017. Forbes reported in 2023 that it was sold in more than 300 stores and had opened a flagship shop in Los Angeles, though revenue was still modest at $5.7 million, up 75% from the year before.
He sold his stakes in a group of car dealerships in late 2022 for at least $15 million and now runs Russell Westbrook Enterprises, which includes a digital advertising business called RW Digital and investments such as Varo Bank. He told Forbes he likes unglamorous industries: "non-sexy is sexy for me." Our headline is Forbes' May 2023 estimate. We have not updated it ourselves for his final seasons.
