Where the money comes from
| Career earnings | Nearly $600 million before taxes, as of December 2023 (Forbes) Forbes |
| Businesses | Canelo Energy gas stations, Upper convenience stores, VMC canned cocktails, Yaoca sports drinks, Canelo Promotions; Forbes valued them together at under $50 million in 2023 Forbes |
Canelo Álvarez is Mexico's biggest boxing star and has won world titles in four weight classes. He turned professional at 15, won his first world title at 20, and in 2021 became the first boxer to hold all four major super middleweight belts at once. Forbes notes he grew up in rural poverty and once fought for $40.
He is also one of the few athletes with a published net worth estimate. In December 2023, Forbes estimated he was worth at least $275 million, after career earnings of nearly $600 million before taxes.
How he earns his money
Almost all of Álvarez's income comes from fights. In Forbes' yearly figures, fight purses make up roughly nine-tenths of his income or more, with only $1.5 million to $10 million a year from sponsors and business. In 2023 Forbes said he could earn about $1.4 million per minute in a 12-round bout.
His biggest year so far came in Forbes' 2026 ranking: an estimated $170 million, which put him No. 2 in the world. Forbes reports he is midway through a four-fight deal with Turki Alalshikh, the head of Saudi Arabia's Riyadh Season, that is reportedly worth as much as $400 million. That run included a win over William Scull in Riyadh and a loss to Terence Crawford in Las Vegas.
Building a business empire
Outside the ring, Álvarez has been building companies in Mexico. Forbes reported in 2023 that he had opened a chain of five Canelo Energy gas stations and 20 Upper convenience stores in western Mexico, and launched VMC, a tequila-based canned cocktail, and Yaoca, a sports drink and supplement brand.
Forbes was careful about their value: it said the businesses together brought in less than $50 million in revenue and were worth less than $50 million. The headline figure on this page is Forbes' own estimate from December 2023. We have not updated it with later fight money, because taxes and spending since then are not public.
