Michael Jordan has an estimated net worth of $4.3 billion, according to Forbes, The World's Celebrity Billionaires 2026 (figures as of March 1, 2026). That is up from $1 billion in 2014.

Michael Jordan earned only about $90 million in salary during his NBA career, yet he is now worth billions. The difference is the Jordan Brand. Nike's bet on a young Bulls guard in 1984 became a gold mine. Forbes says he has earned more than $2 billion (pretax) from partners like Nike, Hanes and Gatorade, and Nike now pays him more than $100 million a year in royalties.

Jordan later moved from the court to the owner's box, buying control of the Charlotte franchise in 2010 and selling most of it in 2023 at a valuation of about $3 billion. He also co-owns a NASCAR team and has invested in sports betting company DraftKings.

How Michael Jordan makes his money

Jordan's wealth has three main sources. The biggest is Nike. The Jordan Brand began as a single shoe in the 1980s and grew into its own business inside Nike, and Forbes says it now pays him more than $100 million a year in royalties. The second is his other sponsors, such as Hanes and Gatorade. All together, Forbes estimates he has earned more than $2 billion before taxes from corporate partners, compared with about $90 million in NBA salary.

The third is team ownership. He became the controlling owner of the Charlotte franchise in 2010 after buying out Robert Johnson for $175 million. When he sold most of his stake in 2023, the deal valued the team at around $3 billion.

From first athlete billionaire to $4.3 billion

Forbes first counted Jordan as a billionaire in 2014, after he increased his ownership of the Hornets. By 2024 Forbes put him at $3.2 billion, then $3.5 billion in 2025 and $4.3 billion in 2026, making him the richest athlete on its celebrity list. Few retired players have kept growing their fortune decades after their last game, and his still rises every year as Jordan Brand sales roll in.
